Abstract Surveillance capitalism hinges on the appropriationand commercialisationof personal datafor profit-making. This chapter spotlights three cases connected to surveillance capitalism: data appropriation, monetisationof health and unfair commercial practice when “free” isn’t “free”. It discusses related ethical concerns of powerinequality, privacy protection, lack transparencyand explainability. The identifies responses address about key put forward in policy academic literature advocated for their impact implementation potential current socio-economicsystem: antitrustregulation, sharingand access, strengthening ownership claims consumers/individuals. A combination active, working governance measures is required stem growth ill-effects protect democracy.
